Chinese New Year - 2

One of the Chinese New Year' personalities is the Chinese god of prosperity. (standing at the middle). He brings lots of gold and good luck for the coming year. These tiny tigers are samples the DIY activity for you to feel the year of the tiger.

They said, people born on the year of the tiger are straightforward, sensitive and courageous, but they can be rebellious or reckless as a tiger!
Is it true? lets hear from those people!
Enjoy your Lunar New Year at Toucheng Farm this year.

Chinese New Year - 1

A long, long time ago, Buddha invited all the animals of the earth to bid him farewell before his departure (from earth). But only twelve animals came over. As a reward, their names were written each year in the order of their arrival.

This is the origin of the Chinese Zodiac very famous today. Here are the 12 animals ( 12 types of personalities ). Rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig.

Here at Toucheng Farm, we have bamboo and wood craft activities, look at this Chinese girl showing proudly her finished product. They are the animals of the Chinese Zodiac.

The most important traditional Chinese holiday is the Chinese New Year or the Spring Festival. The English speaking nations call it the Lunar New Year.

As Chinese New Year is just two weeks away, I will give you a thorough explanation of this awaited moment in the Chinese Community.

This year 2010 is the year of the Tiger.

This DIY bamboo and wood craft welcomes you at the Counter of Toucheng Farm as you enter. Can you identify them? You should come personally to touch them or maybe make one yourself. We will teach you how to make them!

Taiwan as an area where ethnic Chinese community lives, Lunar New Year is grandiosely celebrated.

Here at Toucheng Farm, we celebrate it just like when you were at Grandma's place! (Just like going home for the Christmas holidays!) Eating your favorite dumplings, rice cakes, etc..at grandma's kitchen or hearing those deafening firecrackers... playing with your brothers or cousins...and most of all counting the number of red envelops you received!

A Farmer's diary - 5

Today is Friday,
Cloudy and no rain in the forecast.
Temperature around 25 degrees centigrade.

I planted some rice grain, now I will check how it grew after a few days.

Some have just germinated.

And some have green small leaves.

I will bring them to the rice paddies,

and get ready for transplanting.

They should be planted in rows and allow enough space so they could grow strong and bear rice grain until harvest time.

Toucheng Farm teaches students how to plant rice seedlings in the rice paddies just how you see it here. They have a real experience barefooted and walk along the Farmer's path. Hopefully like him, they will treasure every rice grain in our dining table.

A Farmer's diary - 4

Today is Wednesday. I want to clean the field and prepare to plant white sugarcane.
Weather: cloudy and cool, the soil is dry
Temperature: 25 degrees centigrade
Time: 06:15

Sugarcane belongs to the grass family. It requires strong sunlight and abundant water to grow satisfactorily.

Sugarcane looks like a bamboo cane, where sucrose is stored within.

This is how it is planted.
My water buffaloes will enjoy eating its leaves and my kids will love to drink fresh, sweet sugarcane juice.
