Variegated Stag Beetle (Odontolabis siva)

This is a variegated stag beetle. Both sexes are black and lustrous.

It is one of the favorite attractions during summer.

Stag beetles have a pair of antler-like mandibles on their heads for defense which could knock down their enemies to the ground during a fight.

Where are going this Summer? Any plans? How about a visit to Toucheng Leisure Farm, you can watch the fireflies evening time, or search stag beetles or the awesome "human-faced" spider day time as they rest on its web!

Welcome!

Formosan Blue Magpie

Urocissa caerulea or "long-tailed lady of the forest" is another name for this brilliantly colored bird of Taiwan.

They belong to the Crow family and a noisy kind of bird. When you hear a "Kwak.kwak, kwak"sound, it could be them !

Look: Their feathers are sapphire blue, except the head, neck and the tip of the upper tail - which are black,
Their beak is bright red, and yellow irises.

It is the national bird of Taiwan and an endemic specie.

If you want to catch a glimpse of this lovely bird. come to Toucheng Leisure Farm for a closer look!
But you have to see the real ones!

Taipei European School, British Section, Primary Department (Grade Five)

Taipei European School, British Section Students and their Parents visited Toucheng Leisure Farm for a day , last Saturday, May 28. Here they are in front of the Farm's Mud Hut.
There's a park near the animals area to relax and have fun! Do you think they look happy?

They were lucky to see the Rice paper butterfly's caterpillar, pupa and its adult in reality!

It was Charlotte's birthday and everyone greeted her and share the cake they brought especially for the occasion.
Pasting, writing one's wishes on the sky lantern, lighting and watch it fly up the night sky is one of the main activities of the Farm. It has touched so many hearts and left unforgettable memories in many of our guests. Hopefully it did to some of them.

Kilning, a traditional oven used by our forefathers for ages, is one of the activities they participated. You have to construct a kiln with your bare hands, start a fire and bake the sweet potato.

Look at them feeding the goats and the water buffaloes at the Farm's animal area.

Passion fruits

This is the flower of the passion fruit or (passiflora edulis) sometimes called purple granadilla.

Why is it known as "passion" fruit?
According to Wikipedia's information, the name was given by missionaries who saw the signs in its flowers and looks like the torture or Passion of Christ before His crucifixion.
Look for it and compare!

* The 3 stigmas reflects the 3 nails in the hands and feet of Jesus.
* The threads of the flower resemble the Crown of Thorns
* The vine's tendrils are like the whips.

*The 5 anthers represent the 5 wounds.
*The 10 petals and sepals resemble the Apostles (excluding Peter and Judas).
*The purple petals represents the purple robe used to mock Jesus's claim of kingship.
Its fruit is round to oval form and turns from green to dark purple when ripe.
They have a juicy meat with numerous yellow seeds.
Fresh passion fruits contains beta carotene, potassium and dietary fibre in high content. It is also a good source of vitamin C. A very advisable fruit for people with high blood pressure to consume.
They are now in abundance and waiting for you to gather when ripe.
