Corn (Zea mays)

At Toucheng Leisure Farm, we always  grow corn to give guests the personal touch of watching how a corn plant grows. And of course to harvest and eat them!

Here you can see the flowers of a corn plant!
Then it husks will grow "hairs" which turns from pale yellow,
to reddish pink and when they turn brown, it's time to harvest for a delicious corn on a cob dinner!

But, is corn a vegetable or a grain?

Corn seed is a vegetable, also a grain  and definitely a fruit!
Corn seeds are  grains- it is a dry seed of a grass specie!~
Corn seed is a vegetable because it is harvested for eating!
The botanical definition of a corn is that it is a fruit!

Asparagus or foxtail fern

Asparagus densiflorus sprengeri or asparagus fern, is not really a fern,. Although called a "fern", this South African native
looks like a fern, blooms and has berries. Their beautiful, tiny and white flowers can be seen from June to September to late October.

If you have eaten asparagus (vegetable), they are closely related. Its plumes of foliage are especially loved by florists for flower arrangement.
These photos taken at Toucheng Leisure Farm will give you an idea how they grow
and appreciate them when arrange perfectly with your favorite flowers!

Do you see the chicken feasting on these vegetables left-overs and fruit peelings?

Which do you think came first, the chicken or the egg?

Or ask the children where does the chicken or eggs came from?
One little girl said" from the supermarket"!

Look,  chicken at work!
The chicken's product!

And for your information:
Male chicken are called roosters (adult), the young are called cockerels.
Female chicken are called hens (adults) pullets for its young.
Babies are called chicks and
their edible meat we call chicken!
Its scientific name is Gallus gallus domesticus!

Chickens are primarily raised for its eggs and meat, but some countries raise roosters for cockfighting activities!

Carabao (Bubalus bubalis carabanensis)

Take a look at this cute creature, a new arrival at Toucheng Leisure Farm!
Just six days old! A male calf.

Do you see the smiles as they celebrate the additional member of the family?

Swamp (or water) buffaloes has been the Farmer's best friend for 5,000 years!  They are considered members of the farmer's family! and  in the East they are called "the  living tractors"!

There are many legends handed down for generations about this important animal in Asia:
The Chinese philosophical sage Laozi  rode a water buffalo when he left China through the Han Gu Pass.
In Vietnam it is the most valuable possesion of poor farmers.
In Taiwan the old farmers do not eat beef as a respect to the water buffalo!
