Its plant has antihypertensive property - it was used in folk medicine as a diuretic, mild laxative. It is also a treatment for cardiac and nerve diseases even cancer.
If served as tea, it is believed to reduce cholesterol in Thailand. And here in Taiwan it is also served as tea or eaten as a preserved fruit.
