Formosan Blue Magpie

The Formosan Blue Magpie or Urocissa caerulea or is also sometimes called "the long-tailed mountain lady because of its long and colorful tail.
Identifying them is easy: Both male and female has similar colors - head, neck and breast are black, they have yellow eyes, their bill and legs are red and their plumage is dark blue to purple.

They feed on snakes, rodents, small insects, plants, fruits and seeds. Papaya and figs are their favorite fruits.

Formosan Blue Magpies are monogamous birds. The females incubate eggs, the males help to build nest and feed the young. They are very protective of their young and could attack intruders until they depart.

Flocks of them welcome me when I reach the Farm's gate in the morning.

A wonderful sight to see, indeed!

Formosan Blue Magpie is Taiwan's national bird.
